Lucas McMillan joined the Lander University faculty in 2008 as Assistant
Professor of Political Science.  He was awarded the Monica Martin Stranch Endowed Professorship for exemplary teaching in 2012.

His book, The Involvement of State Governments in U.S. Foreign Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), overviews the increasing involvement of U.S. states and governors in international issues since the 1950s. It examines political, economic, and defense contexts of foreign relations and provides a detailed examination of U.S. states' work to attract foreign investment and promote exports.  The book also analyzes intergovernmental relationships and compares U.S. states' activities with other sub-state governments.  Dr. McMillan's research also appears in the journals Foreign Policy Analysis, International Interactions, and International Studies Perspectives, has written book reviews and teaching commentary for other publications such as the Journal of Political Science Education, and published many op-ed essays in regional newspapers.  He also provides analysis for reporters from newspapers and wire services.

Dr. McMillan's teaching and research interests include American foreign policy, constituent diplomacy (paradiplomacy), international political economy, European politics and integration, U.S. state politics, and federalism.

Active in professional service, he served as President of the South Carolina Political Science Association in 2011-2012.

A native of Mullins, South Carolina, Dr. McMillan is a graduate of Mullins High School. He earned a B.A. in government and economics from Wofford College and spent a semester studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He returned to Great Britain as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and earned an M.A. in international relations at the University of Warwick in England. He completed his Ph.D. in political science from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. McMillan enjoys living in Greenwood with his wife, two adorable boys, and crazy dog.
